One Room Challenge Week 1: Attic Oasis

Although we had a really rough go at the Spring 2021 ORC and didn't have a finished backyard (still missing the outdoor kitchen!) until September due to delays that were out of our control, we are still diving head first into the Fall 2021 One Room Challenge! The Fall ORC is an 8-week design challenge that includes 20 featured designers and hundreds of guest participants that contribute via their blogs & instagram. We will be taking our projects inside for this challenge and will be finishing the renovation/conversion of our...

Attic! When we first saw this house we were told that there wasn't an attic space, but you could tell that there was and our contractor did some poking around in a closet access door during a walkthrough and confirmed its existence. Our home not including the basement was 1,716 sq ft, so it was important to us to have that extra floor with acceptable ceiling heights to finish it and make it a "habitable" space according to code. We gave up a nice size walk-in closet for our primary bedroom in order to accommodate a staircase up to this new 3rd floor, but in the end I would say it was definitely worth it! This 3rd floor houses our second zone heating and cooling equipment, a nice size storage closet, a 4th bedroom and an office/den.

As you can see, we have made some progress up there since the walls are painted and the floors are partially installed, so we thought it would be best to complete the entire space for this ORC. This way we have a nice amount of projects :)

In addition to the photo above, this is what we are currently working with...

Our project list includes:

-Finish installing the herringbone floors in the bedroom

-Install door trim and baseboards throughout the space, plus extension jambs and trim on the round windows and the roof egress windows

-Install and paint trim around cubbies behind beds

-Install and paint vertical shiplap in the stairwell & hang 6 large frames

-Create a plant ledge above the sectional

-Build in office storage cubbies into the knee wall

-Finish the Ikea hack desks/built-ins in both rooms. The office one will have a really cool waterfall edge countertop and a window seat with DIY cushion & the bedroom desk top will be made out of an old leftover door

-DIY doors for the mechanical room and install them on bypass barn door tracks

-Assemble some more furniture

-Add some trim to the storage beds to make them look nicer and add some cool hardware

-Bring in a professional to install a runner on the stairs (will be done at the same time as our main staircase & is much needed as Flash gets older!)

-Style both rooms (some new furniture, rugs, office supplies, art and accents)

and the big mama project that makes me nauseous just thinking about it...

-Custom build and install double bookcase hidden doors for the storage closet (eeeek!)

Don't forget to follow along every week to check-in on the progress of each of the featured designers and guest participants! It is going to be an awesome 8 weeks!
